Chi scrive è un appassionato dei così detti dischi “minori” o da poche copie vendute, che non di rado sono i migliori: è il caso di OBSCURED BY CLOUDS, settimo gioiello dei Pink Floyd del 1972 composto da 10 tracce.

Burning bridges, composta da Wright su versi di Waters, è un brano dolce e pastorale con una perfetta armonizzazione delle voci di Gilmour e Wright. The gold it’s in the… è un hard rock con la chitarra di Dave in grande spolvero ed echi acustici. Una meravigliosa melodia emana Wot’s… uh the deal, di cui Gilmour è compositore, che si esalta come paroliere in Childhood’s end, suo primo testo per i Floyd, al quale ovviamente aggiunge una prestazione chitarristica eloquente. Free four, unico singolo dell’album, è una ballata che profuma di anni sessanta ma, nonostante l’andamento allegro del pezzo, i versi toccano i sentimenti di Roger per via della morte del padre Eric in guerra. Stay è un brano dagli echi country, Mudmen è una passerella per gli assoli delle vibranti corde di Gilmour, Obscured by clouds è un cupo strumentale in cui Mason esibisce la batteria elettronica, When you’re in sprigiona l’alchimia tra la batteria di Nick e l’incendiaria chitarra di David, Absolutely curtains mette in evidenza la vena compositiva del quartetto inglese che fa confluire a suoni cupi e tribali una lunga coda vocale della tribù indigena Mapuga.

I Pink Floyd ebbero una disputa con la casa produttrice del film LES FILMS DU LOSANGE che li portò a citare il titolo dello stesso sul retro della copertina del disco. Non a caso Barbet Schroeder utilizzò solo Obscured by clouds e Absolutely curtains per il commento musicale della pellicola per la quale fu concepito l’album. Tuttavia dato che un disco va commentato in primo piano per la sua qualità, il settimo di Wright & Co. risulta una summa di spontaneità e vena compositiva. Una pagina importante di un periodo musicale ispirato.
