Cosmo’s Factory (album dei Creedence Clearwater Revival del 1970)

Se esistesse una classifica capace di stabilire l’universalità nella cultura popolare di un gruppo o di un artista tenendo conto della durata della carriera, i Creedence Clearwater Revival stravincerebbero questa graduatoria senza possibilità di appello. Una band vissuta appena 5 anni ma comunque capace di regalare dei dischi rimasti pietre miliari della storia della musica. Il massimo vertice creativo può quasi senza dubbio essere individuato in COSMO’S FACTORY del 1970, album capace di lasciare in America un patrimonio di 4 milioni di copie vendute oltre a farsi accorgere di sé anche in altri paesi dove fino a quel momento essi erano dei perfetti sconosciuti, Italia compresa.

L’album in questione è da solo un grande pezzo di storia del rock: almeno 8 degli 11 brani presenti possono essere considerati dei super classici del quartetto californiano. Si comincia con la suite di ben 7 minuti Ramble Tamble dove, tra cambi di tempo e lunghe parti strumentali, le caldissime chitarre dei fratelli Fogerty cominciano a rendere l’ambiente elettrico. John Fogerty, chitarrista e cantante che rimane anche l’unico songwriter del gruppo, dedica ben 2 brani all’orrenda piaga della guerra in Vietnam: l’oscura Run trough the jungle e la malinconica Who’ll stop the rain. Ci sono vari omaggi al rock e al blues anni ’50, come le cover di Before you accuse me di Bo Diddley e My baby left me di Arthur Chudrup. Fogerty contribuisce a questo filone con il rock’n’roll di Travelin’ Band, brano fin troppo simile al più famoso Jailhouse Rock di elvisiana memoria. C’è un’altra cover, quella di I heard it through the grapevine, brano che vanta numerose versioni come quella di Marvin Gaye, ma alla fine quella dei CCR resterà maggiormente nell’immaginario collettivo tanto da poterla considerare a tutti gli effetti un loro grande successo. Per finire, Fogerty regala altre due perle come il trascinante country di Lookin’ out my back door e l’emozionante ballata di chiusura Long as I can see the light, dove il nostro fornisce anche una prova vocale nettamente sopra la media.

COSMO’S FACTORY è addirittura il quinto album pubblicato nell’arco di due anni. Il titolo prende ispirazione dal magazzino a Berkeley dove il gruppo era solito provare fin dagli esordi. Come tutti i dischi di grande successo, sarà anche l’inizio della parabola discendente, dovuta principalmente alle tensioni tra John e Tom Fogerty. Nello stesso anno verrà pubblicato ancora un album, PEDULUM, che però sarà un fiasco e porterà Tom all’abbandono definitivo.
