Animal House (film di John Landis del 1978)

ANIMAL HOUSE è il film che lanciò la carriera di John Belushi nel 1978: una trama travolgente da cima a fondo, con vari protagonisti.

Larry e Kent vogliono entrare a far parte in una delle due confraternite dell’Università di Faber, la Omega, composta da studenti ricchi e snob, ma vengono rifiutati finendo per unirsi alla Delta, composta da ragazzi caciaroni e con l’idiosincrasia per lo studio. I paletti posti dai benestanti scatenano la reazione dei sottostimati, che ne combinano di tutti i colori. Bluto spia una fidanzata altolocata ma compiacente che si lancia in uno spogliarello, la figlia del sindaco e la moglie del rettore vengono facilmente intortate, il cavallo di un membro di Omega viene folgorato da uno sparo a salve. Gli eventi deflagrano e, forti dei mediocri voti dei ragazzi di Delta, le autorità universitarie li espellono. Ma invece di riflettere sulle loro azioni, i reietti organizzano un toga party per dare uno schiaffo morale ai poteri forti e, non soddisfatti, alcuni di loro con ragazze al seguito animano una serata in un locale, ma l’irritata presenza di uomini di colore li spinge a darsela a gambe.

Il meglio (o peggio) deve ancora arrivare, e la scatenata banda consuma la sua vendetta per l’espulsione subita riducendo la parata di fine anno in una piccola guerra urbana, al termine della quale la didascalia specifica cosa sarà del futuro degli interpreti principali.

Ci sono almeno due battute folgoranti pronunciate da Belushi: “Toga Toga!” in merito alla festa di protesta organizzata da Delta, e “Quando il gioco si fa duro i duri cominciano a giocare”, divenuta in seguito esternazione universale. Inoltre John Belushi, interprete di Bluto e tristemente noto per la sua vita smodata, non di rado era sbronzo durante le riprese.

Landis, con ANIMAL HOUSE, crea il suo cinema fatto di personaggi esilaranti, simpatici, grotteschi, al servizio di un copione che modernizza e ribalta la comicità resa anche spinta: non a caso il film fu vietato ai minori di 14 anni. Inoltre gli attori di Delta vennero portati in scena 5 giorni prima di quelli di Omega perché la produzione pensava di creare l’affiatamento tra i due gruppi. Belushi, che era nato per stupire, si scolò una bottiglia di Jack Daniels in un nanosecondo ma Landis affermò che in quella scena dentro alla bottiglia c’era the alla pesca. Obiettivamente difficile credergli.
