The Sound of White (album di Missy Higgins del 2004)

THE SOUND OF WHITE è l’album di debutto della cantautrice australiana Missy Higgins. Impostasi al grande pubblico locale con il singolo in heavy rotation Scar, l’artista appena ventunenne pubblicò un album che la fece emergere prepotentemente in patria ed al contempo conoscere in America ed Europa.

Lo stile di Missy Higgins è molto intimista, nonostante un sapiente uso degli arrangiamenti per creare un’atmosfera pop. Lei stessa, polistrumentista di pianoforte e chitarra, curò personalmente la veste musicale dei brani. Oltre al singolo di apertura, gli altri brani che hanno avuto un forte impatto radiofonico sono stati Ten Days, The Special Two e la title-track The Sound of White, quest’ultima struggente ballata dedicata ad una persona scomparsa e per questo utilizzata in diverse colonne sonore di film a tema.

Le tematiche del disco sono spesso sentimentali, sia in positivo che in negativo o, come nel caso di Katie, legate a tematiche giovanili. Altri brani di interesse del disco sono il brano di apertura All for Believing, Nightminds ed il brano di chiusura They Weren’t There.

Al momento dell’uscita, l’album ricevette unanimi critiche positive sia per la qualità dei brani sia per la giovanissima età dell’artista, dotata sia di una grande capacità compositiva che di qualità vocali eccelse. Mentre nella madrepatria sarà presto una celebrità, paesi come la Gran Bretagna e gli USA accoglieranno timidamente l’album nonostante un incessante tour che la terrà impegnata in giro per il mondo per tutto l’anno a seguire. In Italia (purtroppo) è ancora semisconosciuta.

Nel 2005, sull’onda del successo del disco, verrà pubblicato un DVD dal titolo IF YOU TELL ME YOURS I’LL TELL YOU MINE (frase estrapolata dal testo del brano Don’t Ever) contenente spezzoni di concerti, videoclip, interviste e riprese dai backstage.
